The York County Solid Waste Authority’s (YCSWA) community service project aimed at restocking the shelves at the York County Food Bank has resulted in the collection of 3,060 pounds of food and $910 in donations.

YCSWA’s food drive began on Valentine’s Day and continued through the middle of May.  In addition to participation by the Authority’s nine board members and 22 employees, the program was also supported by the 52 employees of Montenay York Resource Energy Systems, LLC, (operator of the York County Resource Recovery Center ).

The YCSWA also thanks the following additional participants: residents who participated in the Authority’s E-cycling collection on April 2, Bob Evans Restaurant, C & I Boiler, Waste Management, Spring Grove Intermediate, York College of Pennsylvania, Roundtown Elementary, Loganville-Springfield Elementary, Dallastown Elementary, Canadochly Elementary, York Country Day School, Red Mill Elementary, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts and participants in the York County Envirothon Competitions.

Bill Ehrman, YCSWA Executive Director, says “Food comprises more than 12 percent of Pennsylvania ’s waste stream, yet people in our own community go hungry every day.  Working with the Food Bank was an excellent way for us to remind people to be less wasteful and to demonstrate that small efforts can make a big impact right in our own backyards.”

Established in 1982, the York County Food Bank supports the efforts of more than 385 local agencies working to assist families in need in York County .  Through these agencies, the Food Bank annually distributes more than 3 million pounds of food.
