On Tuesday, August 29 at 1PM, representatives from the York County Solid Waste Authority and Hopewell Township will toss out the first official shovelfuls of dirt to commemorate construction that is recycling the closed York County Sanitary Landfill into a new recreation complex.

The new facility, to be called the Hopewell Area Recreation Complex, will be open to all York County residents.  The Authority is investing more than $1 million to build the complex and has an agreement in place designating Hopewell Township as the operator.  Pavex Inc. is managing the construction phase of the project which is expected to be completed in 2007.

The recreation complex, designed by local landscape architect company YSM, will feature a multi-use field (soccer, lacrosse, etc.), an adult softball/youth baseball field, a central walking trail made of crushed stone, mowed (grass) walking trails, a picnic pavilion, portable restrooms and a youth playground and tot lot.  Other features of the complex include areas designated for nature study, bird watching and star-gazing.  About 200 acres of the 306-acre landfill site will be used for the complex’s facilities and activity areas.  Click here to view a drawing of the site in PDF.

The Authority owns and maintains the York County Sanitary Landfill and likewise, the Hopewell Area Recreation Complex.  Hopewell Township is in charge of operations at the recreation complex including scheduling all facility uses and enforcing rules and regulations.

The Authority is the owner of the closed York County Sanitary Landfill, located on Plank Road in Hopewell Township .  The landfill was in operation from 1974 to 1997.   The Authority continues to maintain the landfill and is responsible for environmental monitoring and oversight.

Hopewell Township served as the “host municipality” for the York County Sanitary Landfill while it was in operation.  The Township and the Authority worked together cooperatively to develop the features of the Hopewell Area Recreation Complex.
