The York County Solid Waste Authority presented two solid waste management special awards at the York County Science and Engineering Fair's awards ceremony held March 11 at York Suburban High School . Six junior and senior level projects within this special awards category were judged this year.

Ashley Glinsky, a student from York Catholic High School , was the junior level recipient. Her project was titled "The Effect of Moisture on the Rate of Garbage Decomposition” and examined whether garbage in a landfill would decompose at a faster rate depending on the amount of moisture.

Caroline Spalding, a student from Dallastown High School , was the senior level recipient. Her project was titled "The Effects of Compost and Commercial Fertilizer on the Growth of Phaseolus Vulgaris" and examined whether compost consisting of leaf and yard waste or commercial fertilizer would aid in the growth of a bean plant.

Glinsky and Spalding each received a monetary award worth $200 to further their education and encourage their future environmental studies. The Authority created this award to recognize, encourage and promote responsible environmental stewardship within the realm of solid waste management. Everyone can and should play a positive role in preserving the environment especially where the management of waste is concerned.
