WASTE TIRE COLLECTION PROGRAM DRIVES AWAY WITH 71 TONS

October 14, 2005

The recent one-day waste tire collection program sponsored by the York County Solid Waste Authority, Penn State Cooperative Extension and the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (PADEP); and hosted by  Dover Township resulted in the elimination of more than 71 tons of tires.  Last year, 150 tons of tires were collected over the course of three separate day-long collection events.

The program is aimed at removing waste tires from the environment and reducing the spread of the West Nile virus through the elimination of waste tires as potential breeding grounds.  Fifty percent of the total cost of the program is funded by the PADEP.  The Authority has designated up to $7,000 in support of the program.  This is the second year the Authority has sponsored the waste tire collection program.
