JUNE 5:  DELTA BOROUGH 56th MUNICIPALITY TO IMPLEMENT CURBSIDE RECYCLING.  The York County Solid Waste Authority announces Delta Borough will implement a weekly curbside recycling program for its residents.

APRIL 7:  TIME TO RID YOUR HOME OF HOUSEHOLD HAZARDOUS WASTE.  The York County Solid Waste Authority will hold a Household Hazardous Waste Collection Program on Saturday, May 3 from 9 AM to 1 PM at the Dover Township Municipal Building. 

APRIL 1: AUTHORITY ANNOUNCES EARLY "EARTH DAY" CELEBRATION AT INDIAN STEPS MUSEUM.  The Authority, in conjunction with Indian Steps Museum , will host “Brother Worm” and “Sister Tree”-- two lessons of environmental renewal.  The early Earth Day event will take place at Indian Steps Museum on Thursday, April 17 from 9:30 AM to 2 PM. 

MARCH 12: RECYCLE YOUR OUTDATED ELECTRONICS.  On April 5, you can help divert tons of mercury, copper, chromium and lead from the waste stream.  Recycle your outdated electronics at the Authority’s Management Center parking lot from 9 AM to 2 PM.

MARCH 10: CELEBRATE EARTH DAY WITH A LOW-COST COMPOST BIN.  Celebrate Earth Day on April 22^nd by buying a low-cost backyard compost bin from the York County Solid Waste Authority.  Bins are available for $8 and can be purchased at the York County Solid Waste Authority Management Center , 2700 Blackbridge Road in Manchester Township .  The hours for the Management Center are Monday through Friday, 8 AM to 5 PM.

FEB 28: HATE ROADSIDE LITTER?   HERE'S HOW TO MAKE IT DISAPPEAR.  In celebration of Earth Day (April 22), and in conjunction with The Great Pennsylvania Clean Up, the York County Solid Waste Authority is offering a FREE litter disposal program March 29 through May 31, 2008. 

JAN. 17: AUTHORITY ELECTS OFFICERS FOR 2008.  The York County Solid Waste Authority elected officers and approved annual appointments for 2008.

JAN. 15: MUNICIPALITIES COMMIT TO LONG-TERM WASTE DELIVERY.  Seventy-one out of 72 York County municipalities have entered into or extended existing agreements with the York County Solid Waste Authority to deliver their municipal solid waste to the York County Resource Recovery Center for 25 years once the Center’s expansion is completed.  

JAN. 9: HOUSEHOLD HAZARDOUS WASTE COLLECTION CAPTURES HARMFUL HOUSEHOLD PRODUCTS.  More than 200 households participated in the York County Solid Waste Authority’s fall Household Hazardous Waste Collection Program held at the Authority’s Management Center.  The program collected more than 7 tons of household hazardous waste.    

2007 News Releases

DEC. 19: RECYCLE YOUR CHRISTMAS TREE.  The York County Solid Waste Authority is conducting a free Christmas tree recycling program for all York County residents December 26, 2007 through January 31, 2008.

DEC. 14: TOUR SCHOLARSHIPS AWARDED FOR 2008.  The York County Solid Waste Authority announces the recipients of the 2008 Tour Scholarship Program.  Ten schools and approximately 800 students will participate. 

NOV. 12: RECYCLING CONNECTS OLD PHONE BOOKS WITH NEW LINE OF WORK. This year's phone book recycling program netted 69.4 tons of phone books. 

OCT. 10: PUPPET SHOW ASSEMBLY PROGRAM CELEBRATES "AMERICA RECYCLES DAY".  To promote recycling and celebrate “America Recycles Day” (November 15), the Authority is sponsoring puppet show recycling programs in 17 York County Elementary Schools. 

SEPT. 25: BIGGER BINS EQUAL 71 PERCENT INCREASE IN RECYCLING.  Since September 2006, New Freedom Borough residents have been participating in a year-long pilot program aimed at determining whether larger recycling bins result in an increase in residential recycling.  The results are in and  Borough residents have increased the amount of recyclable materials collected in the borough’s curbside program by 71 percent.

SEPT. 20 : YORK COUNTY SOLID WASTE AUTHORITY APPROVES 2008 BUDGET WITH NO INCREASE IN THE COST FOR WASTE DISPOSAL. The York County Solid Waste Authority has approved its budget for fiscal 2008. The tip fee (cost for disposal) at the York County Resource Recovery Center for 2008 will remain at $56 per ton.

SEPT. 20: APPRECIATION DAY CELEBRATES HAULERS' EFFORTS.  The York County Solid Waste Authority will host “Hauler Appreciation Day” at the York County Resource Recovery Center on Thursday, September 27 from 11:30AM until 1:30PM. 

SEPT. 11: TIME TO RID YOUR HOME OF HOUSEHOLD HAZARDOUS WASTE.  The York County Solid Waste Authority will hold a Household Hazardous Waste Collection Program on Saturday, October 6 from 9AM to 1PM at the Authority's Management Center parking lot located at 2700 Blackbridge Road in Manchester Township. 

AUG. 27: RECYCLE YOUR OLD PHONE BOOKS NOW THROUGH OCTOBER 19.  The York County Solid Waste Authority kicks off its 15^th annual phone book recycling program on Monday, August 27.  Residents and businesses can recycle their old phone books through October 19. 

JULY 20: HOUSEHOLD HAZARDOUS WASTE COLLECTION CAPTURES HARMFUL HOUSEHOLD PRODUCTS.  More than 180 households participated in the York County Solid Waste Authority’s Household Hazardous Waste Collection Program held May 5, 2007.

JUNE 21: YORK COUNTY RECYCLING RATE FOR 2006.  York County ’s recycling rate for 2006 is 56.9 percent, up from 49.4 percent in 2005. 

JUNE 20: YORK COUNTY RESOURCE RECOVERY CENTER RECEIVES FACILITY AWARD.  The York County Resource Recovery Center received the Large Combustion Facility Award from the Solid Waste Division of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) on May 21 at the North American Waste-to-Energy Conference in Miami , Florida .

JUNE 12:  E-CYCLING NETS 83.4 TONS.  More than 1,000 residents participated in the Authority’s April 14 electronics collection program, netting 83.4 tons of electronic gadgets for recycling.

AUGUST 17: GROUNDBREAKING CEREMONY PUTS THE "REC" INTO RECYCLING.  On Tuesday, August 29 at 1PM, representatives from the York County Solid Waste Authority and Hopewell Township will toss out the first official shovelfuls of dirt to commemorate construction that is recycling the closed York County Sanitary Landfill into a new recreation complex.

JULY 19: RECYCLE YOUR CLOTHES AND SHOES AT OUR PUBLIC RECYCLE DROP-OFF AREA.  The York County Solid Waste Authority’s public recycle drop-off area now contains a Salvation Army collection bin for clothing and shoes. 

APRIL 24:  EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS A HIT AT INDIAN STEPS MUSEUM.  The York County Solid Waste Authority, in conjunction with Indian Steps Museum, recently hosted “Brother Worm” and “Sister Tree”-- two lessons of environmental renewal. 

JAN 31: AUTHORITY ANNOUNCES PLANS TO EXPAND RESOURCE RECOVERY CENTER.  The York County Solid Waste Authority has begun to take the necessary steps to plan for an expansion of the existing York County Resource Recovery Center.

OCT. 14: WASTE TIRE COLLECTION PROGRAM DRIVES AWAY WITH 71 TONS. The recent one-day waste tire collection program sponsored by the York County Solid Waste Authority, Penn State Cooperative Extension and the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection; and hosted by  Dover Township resulted in the elimination of more than 71 tons of tires..

SEPT. 13: AUTHORITY JOINS AS SPONSOR OF WASTE TIRE COLLECTION PROGRAM.  The Authority has joined with York County’s Penn State Cooperative Extension to participate as a sponsor in the Pennsylvania DEP waste tire collection program to collect and recycle waste tires. 

AUGUST 23: CONSERVATION DISTRICT HONORS JEN BANKOWSKI FOR EXCELLENCE IN ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION.  The York County Conservation District has presented Jennifer Bankowski with the award for “Outstanding Conservation Educator for 2005”.  Each year, the Conservation District recognizes individuals and groups whose efforts have demonstrated support of conservation in York County .

AUGUST 16: ASH RESEARCH GRANTS AWARDED.  The Authority recently awarded ash research funding grants to Pittsburgh Mineral & Environmental Technology, Inc. (PMET) and eco/Technologies, LLC (eco/Tech).  

JULY 19: DOVER BOROUGH STARTS CURBSIDE RECYCLING.  Dover Borough has implemented a weekly curbside recycling program for its residents.

MAY 23:  FOOD DRIVE COLLECTS 1.5 TONS AND $910 IN DONATIONS FOR FOOD BANK.  The Authority’s community service project aimed at restocking the shelves at the York County Food Bank has resulted in the collection of 3,060 pounds of food and $910 in donations.

APRIL 28:  MUNICIPAL COMPOST SITE GRANT AVAILABLE.  The York County Solid Waste Authority is offering a grant of up to $111,112 to York County municipalities for compost site infrastructure.  

MARCH 11: YORK COUNTY SOLID WASTE AUTHORITY ANNOUNCES SOLID WASTE MANAGEMENT AWARD WINNERS.  The York County Solid Waste Authority presented two solid waste management special awards at the York County Science and Engineering Fair's awards ceremony held March 11 at York Suburban High School.

MARCH 8: EPA ACCEPTS RESOURCE RECOVERY CENTER/MONTENAY YORK INTO PERFORMANCE TRACK PROGRAM.  The York County Resource Recovery Center and its operator, Montenay York Resource Energy Systems, have been accepted into the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) National Environmental Performance Track program, joining more than 400 U.S. facilities in their commitment to consistently exceed environmental regulation requirements.

FEB 22: USEPA REMOVES YORK COUNTY SANITARY LANDFILL FROM NATIONAL PRIORITIES LIST.  The United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) has removed the York County Sanitary Landfill from the National Priorities List, stating that cleanup measures instituted by the York County Solid Waste Authority have been effective in reducing groundwater contamination and protecting human health and the environment. 

FEB 2: GRANT PROGRAM INVITES RESEARCH PROPOSALS ON BENEFICIAL COMMERCIAL REUSE OF MUNICIPAL WASTE COMBUSTION ASH.  The York County Solid Waste Authority announces a grant program offering funding of up to $250,000 for research/development proposals aimed at identifying viable non-traditional commercial uses for municipal waste combustion ash from the York County Resource Recovery Center.
