Meet Our Mascot: Buster the Combustor Dragon™
Buster the Combustor Dragon is the official mascot of the York County Solid Waste Authority. Everything about Buster embodies the key elements of our integrated waste management system!
Buster's dragon scales are green to signify respect for the environment and the Authority's goal to manage waste in a way that minimizes environmental impact. This includes an emphasis on waste reduction, reuse and recycling.
His fiery breath represents the controlled combustion technology used at the York County Resource Recovery Center. The Resource Recovery Center is York County's waste-to-energy facility that uses state-of- the-art technology to reduce your garbage (by 90 percent) to ash and uses the heat from garbage combustion to produce electricity.
Heat produced by combusting garbage is used to boil water to create steam. The steam pressure is then harnessed to operate a turbine and generator to produce enough continuous electricity (represented by the bolt of electricity on Buster's wings), to power more than 20,000 homes!
Waste-to-energy technology that enables us to reduce garbage to ash and then recycle the metals out of the remaining ash. This ability to recycle waste into energy and reduce garbage to ash thereby avoiding land disposal of garbage, saves more than 13 acres of land annually. Using garbage as a fuel to produce electricity saves more than 375,000 barrels of oil annually.
Buster invites you to take a free tour of the Resource Recovery Center to learn more about this process. To schedule a tour, call 717-845-1066.
