    School Programs

The Authority offers programs designed specifically for York County school groups.  All programs are available at no cost to public and private schools as well as home school classes.  Call the Authority at 717-845-1066 for additional information about any of the following school programs.

Tour Scholarship Program:

Grades 1-12.

The purpose of the tour scholarship program is to provide an opportunity for  York County schools to obtain the funding for the transportation needed for a field trip to tour the York County Resource Recovery Center  which they would otherwise be unable to take due to lack of funding.

Provisions: The Tour Scholarship provides for 100 percent of the cost of the school to obtain a bus and driver specifically for a tour of the York County Resource Recovery Center. It is the responsibility of the scholarship recipient to make all necessary arrangements with the bus company and to assume all liability for transportation of students to and from the Resource Recovery Center. The Authority will reimburse the scholarship recipient within 30 days of the completion of the field trip. The recipient must submit an invoice to the Authority prior to the reimbursement.

Requirements: Students in grades 1-12 are eligible for this scholarship. Applicants must represent a school in York County and must agree to complete a project in conjunction with participating in the field trip to the York County Resource Recovery Center. The project must promote environmental management of municipal solid waste and must be completed within the same school year as the field trip. A maximum of 60 students can be accommodated for a field trip.

A limited number of scholarships are awarded.  First received will be first considered.  Scholarship applications are accepted from September through December 1 of each year.  Scholarships are awarded in December of each year   and can be used anytime during the following calendar school year.

Worm Compost Bin Program:

Grades 1-12.

This program enables a classroom to "adopt" a worm bin and its occupants for a period of three to four months.  Watch red worms turn food scraps into beneficial compost right in your classroom!  The Authority provides everything needed to get the compost program started including the bin and a supply of special "red wiggler" worms.  An introductory presentation about how to prepare the bin, what to feed the worms, and how to harvest the finished compost is also provided.

Bin supplies are limited and provided on a first come, first-served basis.
