York County Sanitary Landfill Recycled Into Recreation Complex
In 2007, the Authority "recycled" approximately 200 acres of the landfill into a recreation complex now known as "The Hopewell Area Recreation Complex". The complex is located at 4295 Plank Road in Stewartstown, PA and features multi-use fields, walking trails, a wildlife habitat, tot and youth playgrounds, a picnic pavilion, information kiosks and two bird/wildlife viewing platforms. More than 122 species of birds have been documented at the site and the Pennsylvania Game Commission has deemed the wildlife habitat area to be one of the largest contiguous grasslands in the region. The Authority owns the facility and has an agreement in place with Hopewell Township to operate it. The complex is available for use by all York County residents.
