HOW TO RECYCLE
The following items constitute a majority of the most commonly recycled items included in drop-off and curbside recycling programs. Some municipal curbside collection programs include items not listed here. Items accepted for recycling may vary depending on the type of recycling program and/or where you live.
Aluminum and Steel Cans:
Food/beverage ONLY. Please, NO paint, aerosol, or chemical cans (put in regular garbage). NO propane tanks.
Glass - Food and Beverage Containers:
Bottles and jars ONLY. Any color accepted. NO ceramics, window or auto glass, light bulbs or drinking glasses, mirrors, porcelain, glass cookware or bakeware. Rinse containers and remove and dispose of caps and lids.
Plastic bottles/containers/jugs:
These include food, beverage or detergent bottles ONLY with the numbers 1 through 7 printed on the container. The neck of the container must be smaller than the base. Please, NO shopping bags, oil/chemical containers, toys, plastic wrap, utensils or styrofoam, microwave trays or unnumbered plastics. Rinse containers and remove and dispose of caps and lids.
Plastic bags:
Plastic bags and wrap are NOT accepted in curbside recycling programs, but ARE ACCEPTED at numerous retail outlets such as grocery stores, Target, Walmart, Lowe's and many more. Plastic items accepted include: Newspaper bags, dry cleaning bags, bread bags, veggie bags, product wraps (such as toilet paper, paper towel wrap, etc.), furniture wrap, plastic retail bags, food storage bags, plastic cereal box liners, Tyvek, plastic shipping envelopes, ice bags, and bags labeled #2 or #4. Make sure bags are clean and dry and free of metal closures or sticky labels before taking them to a collection site. For more information, visit www.abagslife.com.
Newsprint & Other Paper:
Color inserts, magazines, catalogues, junk mail, cereal boxes, phone books, printer paper, copier paper, and junk mail.
Cardboard:
All boxes MUST be broken down. Corrugated cardboard and paperboard accepted. Corrugated cardboard is cardboard that has ridges separating the front and back panels. This includes most cardboard boxes. Paperboard is usually a low grade cardboard in a single layer. It includes such items as cereal boxes, shoe boxes or soda boxes.
Where To Recycle
The York County Solid Waste Authority operates a Public Recycle Drop-off Center. The recycle area is located across from the Resource Recovery Center at 2651 Blackbridge Road, Manchester Township, York, PA. Click here for directions
The Recycle Drop-off area is open seven days a week during daylight hours. All items listed above are accepted at the Drop-off Center. For other outlets, consult the yellow pages section of your telephone directory under the heading "recycling".
