The York County Solid Waste Authority Reschedules Free Residential Household Hazardous Waste Collection Program for October 3

The York County Solid Waste Authority (YCSWA) has rescheduled its free residential household hazardous waste (HHW) collection program for Saturday, October 3, 2020. The event was postponed in May due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The HHW program will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Authority’s Ash Recycling and Processing Facility located at 2650 Blackbridge Road, York, PA  17406.

To comply with Pennsylvania state COVID-19 regulations, the following requirements have been added to the event:

  • Residents MUST PRE-REGISTER in order to participate. Click here to register for a specific time in which to bring your materials to the YCSWA HHW Collection Event. PRE-REGISTRATION IS MANDATORY. You will not be allowed to enter the event unless you display the ticket on your dashboard showing you have pre-registered.
  • If you are experiencing any COVID-19 symptoms or have been exposed to COVID-19 within the last 14 days, do not attend this event. Click here for a list of COVID-19 symptoms.
  • As stated in the list of accepted/not accepted items linked to below, no COVID-19 infected materials will be accepted at the YCSWA HHW Collection Event. Please consult the Centers for Disease Control or your physician’s office for directions to dispose of these materials.
  • Only one attendee per vehicle is permitted to attend the event.
  • Masks are required at all times while attending the event.
  • Event participants must stay in their vehicles at all times.
  • All HHW materials must be placed in the trunk or truck bed area (not the back seat) of the vehicle prior to arrival. Event staff will unload materials while residents remain in their vehicles.
  • To minimize the exchange of materials between event participants and staff, please transport materials in containers you will not want returned to you. However, please transport any fuels in Department of Transportation approved containers that can be emptied, sanitized and returned to you.

Household hazardous waste includes any products from the home that are corrosive (drain cleaners or bleach), flammable (gasoline), reactive (chemistry kits) or toxic (pesticides). The program benefits York County by identifying hazardous wastes found in the home and providing an opportunity to manage these materials in a safe and efficient manner.

All York County residents are eligible to bring their household hazardous waste to the collection site. There is no fee to participate. Business and government entities are not eligible to participate. The program is made possible by funding generated from tipping fees collected at the York County Resource Recovery Center and a grant from the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection. After collection, a licensed hazardous waste commercial hauler hired by the Authority will transport the material to permitted hazardous waste sites. These facilities will treat and recycle the materials collected.

The York County Solid Waste Authority facilitates responsible solid waste management through an integrated strategy that emphasizes waste reduction, education, recycling and resource recovery. The Authority is the owner of the York County Resource Recovery Center in Manchester Township; and owns and operates a Recyclable Materials Drop-off Center, a Residential Electronics Recycling Program, a Yard Waste Transfer Facility, an Ash Recycling and Processing Facility and an Education Center.
