The York County Solid Waste Authority Kicks off High School Recycled Art Contest with “Picker Day” Event at Refindings

To promote recycling and celebrate “Earth Day” (April 22), the York County Solid
Waste Authority is sponsoring their fifth annual Recycled Art Contest for York County
High School students. On Saturday, February 23, at 10:00 am, a special “Picker Day”
event invites participants to search through treasures at Refindings, an architectural and
salvage warehouse at 465 Prospect Street in York, for items they can repurpose and
include in their recycled art pieces. Refindings is generously donating selected items to
the students to support their efforts.

Participating schools include Central York High School, Hanover High School,
Kennard-Dale High School, Northern York County High School, Red Land High School,
Red Lion Area Senior High School, South Western High School and York Suburban
High School.

Students have until April 14 to complete and submit their recycled art. The
artwork will be on display at York College’s Marketview Arts Gallery at 37 West
Philadelphia Street in downtown York. The contest exhibit will be on display in the
Marketview Arts Gallery from Sunday, April 14 through Saturday, April 20, 2019. The
contest awards event will be held on Thursday, April 18 at 6:30 p.m., at which time the
winners of the contest will be announced.

Prizes will be awarded for the top three entries as determined by celebrity
judges. Each student winner will receive an art supply gift certificate and their school’s
art department will also be granted an art supply gift certificate in the same amount.

Earth Day is a worldwide annual event celebrated on April 22 to demonstrate
support for environmental protection. The first Earth Day, held in 1970, was founded by
United States Senator Gaylord Nelson as an environmental teach-in, similar to a
general education forum. In 1990 the event grew to the international level with 141
nations participating. Today, it is estimated that more than 192 countries continue to
celebrate Earth Day each year.

Refindings is a 14,000 square foot restoration and repurposing paradise with
nearly 100 vendors, thousands of vintage items, authentic and repurposed antiques,
stained glass, lighting fixtures, ironworks and architectural finds like windows, doors and
much more. Whether they preserve, restore or repurpose a vintage or historic item for
reuse, they delve into their creative selves, practice a greener way of living and, in a
sense, continue the story of the item.

The York County Solid Waste Authority facilitates responsible solid waste
management through an integrated strategy that emphasizes waste reduction,
education, recycling and resource recovery. The Authority is the owner of the York
County Resource Recovery Center and an Ash Recycling and Processing Facility in
Manchester Township; and owns and operates a Small Load Drop-off Facility, a
Recyclable Materials Drop-off Center, and an Education Center.
