The York County Solid Waste Authority Sponsors Recycling Assembly Programs in Nine York County Elementary Schools

  • News

To promote recycling and celebrate “America Recycles Day” (November 15), the York County Solid Waste Authority (YCSWA) is sponsoring puppet show assembly programs in nine York County Elementary Schools.  The recycling-themed program, titled “Magic Pots and Recycled Bottles,” was created by Kathleen Jacobs of “Kathleen Jacobs and Puppets.”

Students will see ordinary household items “recycled” into characters who promote care of the environment through reduction of waste, reuse and recycling of materials.  Kathleen has also developed the YCSWA mascot, Buster the Combustor Dragon, into a character who tells students of the waste-to-energy technology used at the York County Resource Recovery Center (RRC).

Kathleen Jacobs will present the assembly programs November 6 through November 15.  Performances run approximately 45 minutes and feature audience participation.  The Authority offered to sponsor 20 program performances for any school in York County with students in grades one through six.  The following nine schools responded to the Authority’s program offer and will receive “Magic Pots and Recycled Bottles” performances at no charge; Delta- Peach Bottom Elementary, Holy Trinity Catholic School, Locust Grove Elementary, Newberry Elementary, Pleasant View Elementary, Southern Elementary, Valley View Elementary, Wallace Elementary and Yorkshire Elementary. America Recycles Day (ARD) is a national all-volunteer, non-profit 501(c) (3) organization. The goal of the annual campaign is to encourage Americans to recycle and to buy recycled products.  Since its inception in 1997, the ARD campaign has grown substantially.  Last year, residents in every state of the nation participated in America Recycles Day and pledged to recycle.

Kathleen Jacobs is an award-winning artist who has been writing, producing and performing her high-energy brand of interactive theater for more than 30 years. Kathleen combines folklore with a generous dose of imagination to create plays filled with joyful participation. The former art teacher personally designs and constructs all of the inventive puppets, costumes and sets.

Kathleen Jacobs & Puppets has performed thousands of programs for schools, libraries, museums, camps, festivals, theaters and community events throughout the Mid-Atlantic region and beyond.  Performance venues include The Smithsonian Discovery Theater & The National Theater in DC, Artscape & Lively Arts for Little ones in MD, Old Town Theater in VA, Hershey Convention Center in PA and the Long Beach Island Foundation for the Arts in NJ, to name a few.

The Authority facilitates responsible solid waste management through an integrated strategy that emphasizes waste reduction, education, recycling and resource recovery.  The Authority is the owner of the York County Resource Recovery Center in Manchester Township and the now-closed York County Sanitary Landfill in Hopewell Township which now hosts a wildlife habitat and the Hopewell Area Recreation Complex.  The Authority also owns and operates a public recycling drop-off facility and an Education Center where free environmental education programming for children and adults is offered year-round by the Authority.  Within the footprint of the Resource Recovery Center, the Authority’s Small Load Drop-off Facility accepts residential waste, dedicated loads of yard waste, and hosts a free residential electronics recycling program.
