Drywall

CAUTION:  Drywall/wallboard that contains the material asbestos is hazardous to human health and cannot be disposed in the regular trash or at the York County Resource Recovery Center (YCRRC).  For more information about asbestos, please visit the US Environmental Protection Agency’s website here.

REUSE:  Drywall in good usable condition may be able to be donated or resold.  An internet search such as “donate drywall York PA” will show businesses that accept this material for donation, or click here to view a list of York County donation/reuse outlets.  Reusable items can also be resold at garage sales, consignment stores and on internet sale platforms.

RECYCLING:  Drywall may be able to be recycled by certain businesses. Consult our C&D Reuse-Recycling Outlet List here or conduct an internet search such as “recycle drywall York PA” to pursue this option.

TRASH: 

  • Non-asbestos drywall can be disposed in the regular trash, but is limited to two 42-gallon contractor bags per disposal.   Your waste hauler may have additional requirements for large item disposal.  Contact them directly for more information. 
  • Non-asbestos drywall can be disposed at the York County Resource Recovery Center (YCRRC), but is limited to two 42-gallon contractor bags per disposal.  Click here for information on the YCRRC rates and hours.
  • Non-asbestos drywall quantities exceeding the limits stated above can be disposed at Modern Landfill. Click here for more information.
  • Asbestos drywall/wallboard must be disposed of at a landfill that accepts this material.   Blueridge Landfill (click here), Conestoga Landfill (click here), Cumberland County Landfill (click here), and Frey Farm Landfill (click here) are local landfills that accept asbestos-containing materials.  Contact them directly for more information.
