Reducing the Amount of Ash Sent to the Landfill
The waste-to-energy process at the York County Resource Recovery Center (YCRRC) turns much of York County’s waste into ash. The Authority has an agreement with York Reduction Systems, LP, to process that ash stream — and recycle metals, sand, and aggregates from it — at our Ash Recycling and Processing Facility (ARPF).
The ARPF began operations in May 2019, featuring wet separations technology developed and patented by Pure Recovery Group, LP. This first-of-its-kind technology (in the United States) increases the recovery of recyclable materials in municipal waste combustion ash. The process results in the harvesting of viable commodities (aggregates, metals, and sand) from the YCRRC’s combustion ash and reduces the overall volume of ash that must be managed at a landfill.
YCSWA is in the process of identifying end uses for the harvested aggregates and sands recovered at the ARPF.
