Flooring
CAUTION: Vinyl flooring that contains the material asbestos is hazardous to human health and cannot be disposed in the regular trash or at the York County Resource Recovery Center (YCRRC). For more information about asbestos, please visit the US Environmental Protection Agency’s website here.
REUSE: Flooring used in building construction may be able to be donated or resold. An internet search such as “donate flooring York PA” will show businesses that accept this material for donation, or click here to view a list of York County donation/reuse outlets. Reusable items can also be resold at garage sales, consignment stores and on internet sale platforms.
RECYCLE: Flooring may be able to be recycled by some businesses. Consult our C&D Reuse-Recycling Outlet List here or conduct an internet search such as “recycle (carpet, flooring, etc.) York PA” to pursue this option.
TRASH:
- Non-asbestos vinyl and wood flooring can be disposed in the regular trash. Tile flooring can be disposed in the regular trash but is limited to two 42-gallon contractor bags per disposal. Carpet and carpet padding can be disposed in the regular trash but is limited to no more than six feet in length and must be able to be carried by one person. Your waste hauler may have additional requirements for large item disposal. Contact them directly for more information.
- Non-asbestos vinyl and wood flooring can be disposed at the York County Resource Recovery Center (YCRRC). Tile flooring can be disposed at the YCRRC but is limited to two 42-gallon contractor bags per disposal. - Tile flooring, carpet, or carpet padding that exceeds the quantity and size limits listed above and any flooring that contains asbestos can be disposed at Modern Landfill. For more information click here.
- Asbestos vinyl flooring must be disposed of at a landfill that accepts this material. Blueridge Landfill (click here), Conestoga Landfill (click here), Cumberland County Landfill (click here), and Frey Farm Landfill (click here) are local landfills that accept asbestos-containing materials.
