Medication

CAUTION:  Some medications pose a risk to the environment.  Try to avoid flushing medications down the toilet.

REUSE:  Unexpired, unopened over-the-counter human and pet medications may be able to be donated.  An internet search such as “donate pet medication York PA” will show businesses that accept this material for donation, or click here to view a list of York County donation/reuse outlets.

TRASH:

  • Prescription and over-the-counter human and pet medications can be safely managed in York County using free Medication Return Boxes in most police departments.  Medications collected in these boxes are destroyed at the York County Resource Recovery Center (YCRRC).
  • Prescription and over-the-counter medications can be disposed in the regular trash.  As a precaution, mix the material with an undesirable substance such as coffee grounds or kitty litter and destroy any personal information on medication containers before disposal.
  • Prescription medications may also be disposed via appointment at the YCRRC.
