Roofing Materials

REUSE:  Roofing materials used in building construction may be able to be donated or resold.  An internet search such as “donate roofing material York PA” will show businesses that accept this material for donation, or click here to view a list of York County donation/reuse outlets.  Reusable items can also be resold at garage sales, consignment stores and on internet sale platforms.

RECYCLE:  Metal roofing material can often be recycled.  An internet search such as “recycle metal roofing York PA” will show businesses that accept this material for recycling. 

TRASH: 

• Asphalt, metal, vinyl and wood shake shingles and tar paper can be disposed in the regular trash but are limited to a quantity of one pick-up truck or small trailer load.  Rolled rubber roofing material can be disposed in the regular trash but is limited to no more than six feet in length and must be able to be carried by one person.  Your hauler may have additional requirements for large item pickup.  Contact them directly for more information. 
• Asphalt, metal, vinyl and wood shake shingles and tar paper can be disposed at the York County Resource Recovery Center (YCRRC) but are limited to a quantity of one pick-up truck or small trailer load.  Rolled rubber roofing material can be disposed at the YCRRC but is limited to no more than six feet in length and must be able to be carried by one person.  Click here for information on YCRRC rates and hours. 
• Roofing material that exceeds the quantity or size limits listed above, and any asbestos, clay, concrete and slate roofing materials must be disposed at Modern Landfill.  Click here for information.
