The York County Solid Waste Authority Sponsors Recycling Assembly Programs in Eight York County Elementary Schools

To promote recycling and celebrate America Recycles Day (November 15), the York County Solid Waste Authority (YCSWA) is sponsoring puppet show assembly programs in eight York County Elementary Schools.  The recycling-themed program, titled “Magic Pots and Recycled Bottles,” was created by Kathleen Jacobs of Kathleen Jacobs and Puppets.

Students will see ordinary household items “recycled” into characters who promote care of the environment through reduction of waste, reuse, and recycling of materials. Kathleen has also developed the YCSWA mascot, Buster the Combustor Dragon, into a character who tells students of the waste-to-energy technology used at the York County Resource Recovery Center.

Kathleen Jacobs will present the assembly programs November 6 through November 17. Performances run approximately 45 minutes and feature audience participation.  The following seven schools responded to the Authority’s program offer and will receive “Magic Pots and Recycled Bottles” performances at no charge: Edgar Fahs STEAM Academy, Hayshire Elementary, Newberry Elementary, St. John the Baptist, Red Mill Elementary, Wallace Elementary, Canadochly Elementary, and Holy Trinity C.S.

Kathleen Jacobs is an award-winning artist who has been writing, producing, and performing her high-energy brand of interactive theater for more than 30 years. Kathleen combines folklore with a generous dose of imagination to create plays filled with joyful participation. The former art teacher personally designs and constructs all the inventive puppets, costumes, and sets. Kathleen Jacobs & Puppets has performed thousands of programs for schools, libraries, museums, camps, festivals, theaters, and community events throughout the Mid-Atlantic region and beyond. Performance venues include The Smithsonian Discovery Theater & The National Theater in DC, Artscape & Lively Arts for Little ones in MD, Old Town Theater in VA, Hershey Convention Center in PA, and the Long Beach Island Foundation for the Arts in NJ, to name a few.

America Recycles Day (ARD) is a national all-volunteer, non-profit 501(c) (3) organization. The goal of the annual campaign is to encourage Americans to recycle and to buy recycled products. Since its inception in 1997, the ARD campaign has grown substantially. Last year, residents in every state of the nation participated in America Recycles Day and pledged to recycle.
