Household Appliances
Household appliances that are in good working condition can often be donated. An internet search such as “donate (air conditioner, ceiling fan, dishwasher, stove, etc.) York PA” will show organizations that accept these items for donation. Local electricity providers also often accept certain used appliances for recycling and sometimes offer free pick-up and/or financial rewards. In addition, companies that sell appliances often accept used items at no cost when the customer is replacing them with new appliances.
Household appliances that contain metal can also be recycled at metal salvage businesses. An internet search such as “recycle (air conditioner, dishwasher, stove, etc.) York PA” will show businesses that accept these items for recycling.
Electric appliances that contain metal and do not contain refrigerants can be recycled at the York County Solid Waste Authority’s free Residential Electronics Recycling Program. For more information, click here.
Small household appliances can be disposed in your regular trash. Large appliances can be disposed curbside during large item pick-up or at the York County Resource Recovery Center (YCRRC). Your waste hauler may have additional requirements for large item disposal. Please contact them directly for more information. Click here for information regarding the YCRRC hours and rates. Appliances containing refrigerants such as air conditioners, dehumidifiers, freezers and refrigerators, that are disposed at YCRRC, are taken to a contractor that safely and responsibly removes and disposes of the refrigerants. Please note that food must be removed from freezers and refrigerators before disposing of these items.
