Unwanted household appliances that are in good working condition can often be donated. An internet search such as “donate (air conditioner, dishwasher, stove, etc.) York PA” will provide options of organizations that accept these items for donation. Local electricity providers also often accept certain used appliances for recycling and sometimes offer free pick-up and/or financial rewards. In addition, companies that sell appliances often accept used items at no cost when the customer is replacing them with new appliances.
Household appliances that contain metal can also be recycled at metal scrap businesses. An internet search such as “recycle (air conditioner, dishwasher, stove, etc.) York PA” will show businesses that accept these items for recycling.
Smaller household appliances, such as air purifiers and vacuum cleaners can be disposed of in your regular trash. Larger appliances such as stoves and refrigerators are accepted at the York County Resource Recovery Center (YCRRC) or may be disposed of during curbside bulk waste pick-up. Please note that food must be removed from freezers and refrigerators before disposing of these items. Appliances containing refrigerants such as Freon like air conditioners, dehumidifiers, freezers and refrigerators, are taken from the YCRRC to a contractor that safely and responsibly removes and disposes of the refrigerants. If you choose to bring your items to the YCRRC, click here for additional information on hours and rates. Your waste hauler may have additional requirements for bulk waste disposal. Please contact them directly for more information.
